RE:Movies--What show have you been to lately?

Slumdog Millionaire doesn't sound like something I'd want to see.
This is what I posted before I knew what the movie was about. Now it's one I definately want to see along with Vicky Christina Barcelona, The Reader and Milk.
Becca, I love Meryl Streeps sense of humor. ONe of the best actresses ever. I just got through reading the best and worst dressed on MSN main page and the writer also compared Kate Winslet to Grace Kelly so I thought that was cool that I said it first...LOL
Sophia Loren is FINALLY starting to show her age a bit. She still is stunning at 75 but now she at least looks 65. LOL
Also thought Jennifer Aniston was flawless and had great composure with her ex and nemisis sitting in the front row about two feet from her.
FYI Becca, the player in above post says something about not being available...darn!

The Academy Awards show this year was one of the best in a very long time. Although I had heard of Hugh Jackman, I really did not know his work. Now I am a big fan! He did a wonderful job and kept things quite interesting. This is the first show that I can remember that I watched from beginning to the very end.
I did miss the movie clips of each actor and the work they were nominated for and why. However, having past winners present the awards and say a few words about the nominees was brilliant, very heartfelt.
Everyone was so beautiful! I especially liked Miley Cyrus and what she was wearing as well as Penelope Cruz and Sarah Jessica Parker.
I am not a big fan of Steve Martin so the bit with Tina Fey was one of the few scenes I did not like although I do like Fey.
Is it just me or do the actors seem much more "down to earth" than previously?

I rented VCB last night and I was getting a little concerned when 1/2 the movie went by and no Penelope. When she finally showed up she was a joy to watch. I have always liked her and I'm so happy she won the oscar. I think Javier and her make a striking couple.

I went and saw Slumdog Millionaire and thought it was every bit as good as the hype suggests. It was sickening, brutal, eye opening, funny and I loved how they presented the whole millionaire game. I can't wait to rent it on video to watch and see what I missed. Danny Boyle the producer brought the young kids in the movie to the Oscars and some couldn't speak english but you could just see the excitement in them. I read somewhere that he even bought some of them new houses to live in rather than send them back to the slums. Such talent in all the actors with no acting previously.

Rented Cadillac records and I thought it was very good. I wasn't really familiar with Muddy Waters but when Chuck berry came on the scene I was up to date. It's a true story and Beyonce portrayed Etta James (at last) and she was knock out great. Is there anything this woman can't do.

Haven't been here in a while... In case any1 had trouble before and wants to see it, the video near the bottom of pg 2 is watchable.
>>> do the actors seem much more "down to earth" than previously?
I thought so. I think it's become more and more that way over the years. I guess there's always a few who behave like their stardom is above and beyond anything in the universe even though that demeanor has become more outdated. The state of the economy during the time of this Oscar broadcast also influenced the tone that night.
Thanks for the heads up about Cadillac Records. When I finally get to rent Slumdog (sheesh!) I'll check out that one, too.

Last movie i saw was a haunting in conneticut(sp) frankly the trailer was better than the movie. It was very slow paced & focused more on the kids health problems. Not enough scares for me. 5/10
I watched the documentary on the discovery channel & it was very good.

Not enough scares for you, Sue? I'm laughing only because it would probably be too scary for me.
I saw I Love You, Man recently and give it 8/10 stars. The first 20 min I was worried, but it got a lot better. Very funny, well-written, (sometimes a little too profane), and insightful romantic comedy. I rarely enjoy romantic comedies, but this was unique and didn't disappoint.

Has anyone seen it?

I saw I Love You Man but felt it was too silly and dumb. The main character was too goofy to be believed, no one behaves like that and no wonder he doesn't have guy friends, he is too weird. It is a wonder he has girlfriends.lol. I thought it would be funny but it just kind of bored me. All the funny parts were on the commercial. You may like it if you go for silly humor though. I hated Borat and Animal House and that ilk so I may not be the best judge. I like more sophisticated style of comedy than silly slapstick kind.

I can sure understand that, Bubu. That's why I rarely seek out romantic comedies. They're often too sophmoric for my taste. I'm fussy about what I see when going to a theater and since that film had gotten quite a positive (overall) rating, I took my chances. I only wish I can elaborate more on why I thought it was very well-written and insightful, but it would be spoiling it for others. We went with another couple and the discussion we had over it was enjoyable and interesting, so I guess that added to my eager 2 thumbs up about it. lol

I read some news about The Lovely Bones today, so it got me thinking about it. That novel was published in 2002 and the movie should be out later this year. I can't wait to see this! I hope Peter Jackson does it justice because I thought the story was very well done. The cast looks good to me, too.

Thanks for the trailer, Becca!

Good idea, Tanya. I think that those who read it already would agree that this is worth your time. I'm already feeling positive towards it being a good movie considering it's being released close to Oscar time.

Lol Sue, I just saw that too and loved it. I like Affleck but not in roles like this but he did a good job with it. Crowe and Mirren were great although Crowe is looking a little pudgy and scruffy.

Becca, I read My Sister's Keeper too and found it quite interesting. I would watch the movie based upon the interest of the book. However, I have found it much more entertaining to watch a movie first then read the book. The book always enhances the movie but rarely does the movie enhance the book.
Big fan of Susan Sarandon!

Interesting, cindi - I could never do that. Once I see the movie, I'd have no reason to read the book knowing how it ends and stuff. I'm not that disciplined. My thrill is doing it the other way around - seeing the characters that were in my head suddenly come to life, etc. It's gonna bother me if My Sister's Keeper bombs as a movie.

Funny how differently we view things. When I see a really good movie, I want to read the book and add to what I saw. I want the details, the background and such.
I am one of those people who cannot stand to "not know." When I get a book, I read the first chapter, the last chapter, then go back and begin at the second chapter and move forward. I just have to know how it is going to end. I have no patience to wait through a entire book to find the ending. *Wink* Probably why I detest "whodunits."

Is My Sister's Keeper the story about sister needing the transplant? I thought the book was very interesting coming from each person's different point of view. The movie could be pretty cool.

Right on, pcw. The story was pieced together in a very interesting way. Here's the trailer that bothered me...well, half of it did. It already seems too Hollywood for me, but I hope I'm pleasantly surprised next month. Here's something I didn't catch the first time. At around :53 you'll see the dog. Remember the dog? I loved that dog. lol

"The Wrestler" is a great movie. I am not a fan of watching wrestling and this movie is not just one big wrestlefest, it is a great story and very well acted. Here is the trailer, it is now out on DVD:
