little green and orange boxes to the left of the messages?   I thought at first they were telling me what I had already opened, but nope, that's not it!   Anyone?

I'm not sure what you're talking about.  I get little orange boxes to the "right" of the thread title on the main general discussion board that say new.  It's to tell me that someone new has posted on the thread.  After you open it to read the message, it disappears.

Lemonjello, if you look at the bottom of that page there is a legend that tells you what those boxes mean. I think the yellow one with the arrow is hot topic
